The basics
Be yourself, respect the people you talk to, and follow the law where you and they live. Everything below applies to chats, groups, statuses, calls, profiles, Verse, Chatter Docs, public links and Masa.
What is not allowed
- Harassing, threatening, bullying or doxxing anyone, or inciting violence or hatred.
- Impersonating a person or organisation, or misleading people about who you are.
- Spam, unsolicited bulk messages, scams, phishing and malware.
- Child sexual abuse material — we report it to the authorities and close the account.
- Sharing someone's intimate images without their consent.
- Content that infringes copyright, trademarks or other rights (see Reporting IP infringement).
- Selling illegal goods or services, money laundering, sanctions evasion or other financial crime.
- Automated access, scraping, reverse engineering, overloading the Service or interfering with other people's devices.
- Using test or fake numbers to get around limits, or creating accounts to evade a ban.
Adult content
Adults may share adult content with other consenting adults. Mark such photos and videos 18+ when you send them. Media marked 18+, and any file matching a list of known illegal material, is kept in a separate, access-restricted area of our storage with a record of who sent it and when, so it can be reviewed. Illegal material is removed and, where the law requires, reported.
Masa A.I
Do not use Masa to create unlawful content, to impersonate real people, to deceive others with A.I-written messages presented as from someone else, or to get around its safety limits.
Stokvels, splits and money
Verse's stokvels and bill splits keep a record between people who know each other; they are not an investment product. Do not use them — or ChatterPay once it opens — to collect money under false pretences or to run pyramid schemes.
Reports and what we do
We do not read private chats as a matter of course, so we rely on reports. Anyone can block or report an account from its chat info page; we act on the evidence the reporter chooses to share and on what the account made public. Breaking these rules can lead to a warning, removal of features, suspension or permanent closure of the account and, where the law requires, a referral to the authorities. We explain our decision where we safely can, and you can ask us to review it at legal@chatterhub.co.za.
